For Australian primary schools

Braid turns every assessment into a teaching decision.

Teachers already listen to children read, dictate spelling tests and glance at thirty mini-whiteboards. Braid does the working-out: it pinpoints exactly which letter-and-sound skills each child is missing, proposes small teaching groups, and puts a matching activity in the teacher's hand for the next lesson.

How it works

Assess, analyse, act. Then round again.

  1. Assess

Capture what the child actually did: live one-on-one marking on a touch-screen laptop, a paper spelling test typed up afterwards, or a one-minute Quick Check down the class list.

  2. Analyse

For every child and every letter-sound pairing, Braid works out whether they have it, are getting it, or haven't got it yet, in the order your school's own scope and sequence teaches them.

  3. Act

Suggested teaching groups, each matched to a ready-made activity to reteach, consolidate or apply. The teacher adjusts, prints, and teaches it tomorrow.

  4. Re-assess next window, and the loop turns again.

Names are invented. Every cell is a count, never a percentage, and drills to the child's actual attempts. A blank cell means no evidence, which is not the same as a gap.

Straight talk

What Braid will not tell you

Braid reports what a child can and cannot yet do with the sounds they have been taught. It is not a screener and it is not a diagnosis.

  • It never says a child is behind for their year level. Every result is relative to what this class has been taught.
  • It never identifies dyslexia or any learning difficulty. That is a clinical judgement for qualified people.
  • It never claims that a group caused an improvement. It tells you what is still showing up, and puts it back in the rotation.

Where things are

Being built now, with schools in mind first

Braid is in development for a small number of Australian primary schools. If you lead literacy at a school and want to see it early, or you have a scope and sequence you would like it to follow, write to us.
